Three nights ago, a runner passed near the outer villages.
He did not stop. He did not speak. But we saw the marks on his arm — red lines like those worn by warriors from the east.
The old men say their land lies far beyond the river — but not so far as it once seemed.
No one here has seen the pale ones. But stories move faster than feet.
They say Tuskaloosa did not bow. That the strangers wrapped him in red and walked him west.
That he smiled once.
