“The Marked Path”
De Soto expedition - Central Alabama, Fall 1540
We escaped one encounter in Tuskaloosa’s lands without bloodshed.
Some called it a relief. Others called it unfinished.
The trees are thicker now. The trails narrower.
The air feels different — heavier, like it’s listening.
Our native guides speak less with each day.
One slipped away in the night.
The others keep glancing at the treetops.
Some of the men noticed carvings in the pines — arrows cut deep, some forward, some back.
Deliberate. Not ours.
De Soto looked once and said nothing.
So we keep moving.
At night, the forest no longer sings.
We do not know who watches us now.
But I no longer think we are strangers to this land.
Only unwelcome.
To Be Continued…
Seven trees along the trail — six with carvings.
Some pointed forward. Others pointed back.
They held these markings:
What was carved into the 7th tree?
